It is a PROPOSED world heritage site, for two times. The island of Majuli, is in the breast of the mighty Brahmaputra, keeping solemn company of the ghats of Nimati, not far away from Jorhat. This magnificient and only one of its kind island is the LARGEST RIVER ISLAND in the WORLD.Pride of the Assamese people.
Famous for its SATRAS and the various indigenous population. it has remained relatively untouched from the ravages of urban change. A rustic auro captivates the chants of the satras in the evening and when it is festival time, it transforms itself like a rogue and runaway beautiful women ,who enthralls with the beauty of sound and color.
Its people have however a different tale to tell. Relatively undeveloped, though not impoverished, every few years it had to endure the hardship eschewed by its own mentor and source of being.The mighty Brahmaputra.
The embankments are stronger now and the people are a bit relaxed, but then they are tough as nails and a smile on their lips.
